A flashback to 17 years ago reveals that the Diviner cloned Gwyn from his own genetic material to replace him should he die before his extensive mining operation revealed the buried Protostar on the Tars Lamora prison colony, though why exactly he was seeking the ship remains a mystery.Īs Janeway attempts to explain to Gwyn and Zero why the Protostar was located on Tars Lamora in the first place, she realizes changes deliberately made to her programming have prevented her from accessing this information. Zero consoles Gwyn on all the personal upheaval she's endured lately while welcoming her to the crew as Gwyn mulls over why her father would give her up so willingly just for a chance to seize the Protostar. A resulting Klingon ambush causes Dal to disastrously fail the test, leading Dal to restart the test, with a frustrated Dal replacing Jankom with a holographic simulation of Scotty only to accept the test as a no-win scenario. When Dal and Jankom receive the program's distress signal from a vessel stranded with failing systems in the Neutral Zone, the two crewmen contemplate leaving the Kobayashi Maru behind before the holographic crew point out how selfish this decision is and threaten to resign on the spot. The holodeck program creates a replica of the Enterprise-D's bridge, and Dal and Jankom are joined by holographic projects of Nyota Uhura, Doctor Beverly Crusher, Odo and Spock to assist them with the simulated mission. Determined to prove himself as a leader while the rest of his friends continue to disagree with him about their next destination, Dal decides to run the Kobayashi Maru program to prove his worth as the Protostar's self-appointed captain. After running through a sample of programs, Dal learns about the Kobayashi Maru, with Janeway regarding it as the ultimate test for any Starfleet commanding officer. Hologram Janeway tracks the starship's coordinates and is astonished to discover they are now 4,000 light years away from their starting location deep within the Delta Quadrant and are now in the relatively unexplored Gamma Quadrant. The Protostar emerges from warp speed as the nascent star powering its engines runs dormant, with the cruiser moving on impulse power. And joined by a holographic projection of Kathryn Janeway, the ragtag ensemble learned their starship is powered by a literal protostar, jumping across the galaxy while pondering what their next move should be.
